Special Needs Health Transformations
As any special needs parent will tell you, caring for a child with special needs is not for the faint of heart. I care for two special needs children of my own not to metion, as a special needs pediatric nurse, I care for other special needs and medically fragile children belonging to the families I help weekly.
Our family has been on a wellness revolution since March 2014. As I look back over the 1.5 years +, I marvel at God's goodness and how His creation has been able to help each one of us improve our health and well-being. The transformation alone in my 2 special needs children is breathtaking!
My oldest, now 11 years old, has Autism, Bi-polar, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, ADHD, and Asthma. In March 2014, he was taking 10 medications every day and also had 2 other medications he took on an as-needed basis for asthma and for sleep. Now, 1.5 years later, he is down to 2 medications, both of which have been weaned down, with one on schedule to be discontinued by the end of the year! Through the past 1.5 years, we have seen wonderful parts of our son's personality and being that we had never seen before because it was locked inside his Autistic brain. He has grown over 3" in the last 1.5 years having come down on medication that was restricting his growth. He went from off-the-charts high trigyliceride levels that had his cardiologist concerned to levels within normal limits. He went from being characterized as "obese" according to BMI standards because of the metabolism-slowing effects of a drug he was on to being well within normal limits having a constant weight with even a loss of 2 pounds over the time he grew 3." He went from a sluggish, emotional expressionless, sad, discouraged, anxious boy to an energetic, full of expression, happy, determined boy. If that isn't transformation, I don't know what is!
My youngest, now 9 years old, has Primary Immune Deficiency Disorder, Athsma, 3 heart defects, severe Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, and anxiety related to trauma symptoms due to dealing with his brother's special needs. In March 2014, he was taking 8 medications a day including weekly antibody transfusions and also had 2 other drugs he took on an as-needed basis for his asthma and breakthrough reflux symptoms. Now 1.5 years later, he takes 1 medication (at half the dose he was originally taking) which most likely will be discontinued sometime next year. His transfusions were discontinued in the middle of the summer of last year since he had been healthy for the past few months and so that we could get an accurate antibody count of what his body produces (at the beginning of the year, we were told that he would never outgrow his immune disorder, his body would never produce the antibodies needed for him to fight bacterial infections, and he would require the transfusions for the rest of his life). We were amazed at his blood draw in mid-Fall of last year to find out that his body has all of the sudden kicked into action and has started producing antibodies. As a result, he was allowed to continue off of the transfusions unless he developed another infection. He has yet to have a bacterial infection meaning he went from 1-3 bacterial infections/month to NO bacterial infections in 1.5 years! That's quite the transformation!
So what made the difference? We began using certified pure essential oils to help support our boys and their needs. We applied various oils topically, mostly to the bottom of their feet 1-2 times a day. In December, we began using a trio nutritional supplement pack of amazing all-natural, whole food nutrients and essential oils (our whole family takes them). Within a month of using essential oils, our oldest's psychiatrist started decreasing his toxic psychotropic drug because of the huge turn-around she observed in him, and that just started the medication weaning process for him. In addition, we have started to be careful about what we eat - choosing foods that are organic, non-GMO, unprocessed, containing no artificial flavors or colors and harmful preservatives or antibiotics. In a society where so much of our food (if you can even call it that) is tainted with so many things that have been scientifically proven to cause cancers and other harmful side effects, it's important to do all you can to avoid those toxic foods/ingredients whenever possible.
My life over the last 1.5 years has gone from ensuring that my kids got their 18+ medication doses each day (not to mention many trips to the pharmacy) and a visit to some doctor/specialist/therapist at least once a week to giving my kids a total of 3 medications (1 phamacy visit/month) and ensuring that they take their nutritional supplements and use their essential oils. What about doctor visits? Some of the specialists have discharged them; their primary sees them once a year for a well visit, and the few remaining specialists see them every 4-6 months just for a routine follow-up (the only exception is my son's psychiatrist who needs to see him more frequently during the medicaiton weaning process and the weekly counseling both boys receive)! Yes, my life is much less complicated medically (that's an understatement!), and I praise God for that!
I believe that God created everything. I believe He gave the nature around us for us to use and for our good. Essential oils are the God-given immune system for plants and trees that contain them. It only makes sense that they would have therapeutic benefits for us as well since the creation account says that God gave man "every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it" and made all kinds of trees to grow up from the ground that were "pleasing to the eye and good for food," and there is even mention of the presence of aromatic resin (Genesis 1:29; 2:9-12).
