Trusting God’s Design for Birth

As a homebirth midwife, I get to see the beauty of God’s design day in and day out.  On the rare chance I am with a client who chooses a hospital birth, or my client has to transfer into medical care for one reason or another, or a client comes to be for a subsequent pregnancy after being traumatized or dissatisfied with her previous hospital birth, I am always shocked by how much God’s design for birth has been hijacked by the medical world.  It has forced me to reflect on how important it is for a woman to truly be educated about birth and to consider who she is willing to trust for the birth process, especially if she is a Christian.  God made a woman’s body for birth, and the body isn’t broken!  The medical world sees birth as a medical problem that needs intervention.  The medical world sees fit to take the place of God’s design.  It’s tragic!

My goal is to put my reflections into blog posts to help women think through the various aspects of birth and better decide for themselves what they want.  I don’t want my posts to be shameful, if you choose a different way than I suggest.  I firmly believe in the right of the birthing woman to make her own choices and decisions surrounding her birth and recognize that what might be right for one woman, is not always right for another woman.  I wouldn’t be a midwife (“with woman”) if I didn’t truly believe that.  My goal is simply to present the facts and options in a way that often isn’t presented, particularly in a hospital setting, to better help you think through your options as you make your decisions about your pregnancy and birth. I plan to start with the basics to help give understanding to the terminology describing the types of births and the settings and the providers and dig deeper into various topics from there. Stay tuned!
