Natural Diaper Cream

With the birth of my nephew last month, I have started to think more about natural baby products.  I am appalled at the amount of toxins in baby products!  At a time when their skin is thin and sensitive, and their bodies are fragile and developing, it's even more important to protect babies from unnecessary toxins.

 

If you are concerned about the toxins in your store-bought diaper cream, try this recipe for an all-natural, calming and soothing diaper cream.  Let me know what you think about it!

 

Natural Diaper Rash Cream

1/2 cup organic, raw unrefined shea butter

1/4 cup organic, raw coconut oil

1 Tbsp. beeswax pastilles or beeswax bars

10 drops Lavender Essential Oil (or Roman Chamomile or Melaleuca for irritated rash)

2 TBSP Vegetable Glycerin (optional)

 

In a double boiler (or just a small pan inside a larger pan) with water in the bottom of the larger pan, place the shea butter, beeswax, and coconut oil in the top pan and bring to a boil. Leave in the pan long enough to melt all the shea butter and beeswax.

 

Remove from the heat.  Allow to sit for 5 minutes then add essential oil. 

 

Place in the refrigerator for 1-2 hours or until set (This step is an important part of the emulsifying process).

 

Once cooled (it will be harder), scoop into your mixer.  Add vegetable glycerin, if using.  Beat with mixer for 5 to 10 minutes (this allows oxygen to circulate through the cream to fluff it up and thicken it).  Store in a glass container (I used recycled and sanitized baby food jars I had been given from the mother of a patient of mine).

Raw Shea butter - makes the skin soft, has properties that help the body to rid itself of fungi and yeast , high in Vitamins A and E, helps promote collagen production in the skin, calms and reduces/prevents inflammation in skin, more information

 

Coconut oil - softens and moisturizes skin, protects skin, has properties that help the body to rid itself of fungi and yeast; more information

 

Vegetable glycerin – keeps skin hydrated and protected; more information
